Stephen Fleming Appointed Head Coach of England Test Team; Joe Root Reappointed Captain

Brendon McCullum was removed as the coach of the England Test team earlier this month following a string of poor performances and some off-field controversies. Former New Zealand captain Stephen Fleming has been appointed as the head coach of England’s Test cricket team. Joe Root has been reinstated as captain of the Test team; he is the country’s most successful Test captain. Fleming said, “This is one of the most prestigious coaching roles in world cricket, and I am very proud to take on this responsibility.”

Kathmandu, 14 Shrawan – Former New Zealand captain Stephen Fleming has been named the new head coach of the England Test cricket team. Joe Root has also been reappointed as the captain of the Test side. The 53-year-old Fleming is taking on a head coach role for a national team for the first time. He has never previously worked as a national team head coach but served as the head coach of Chennai Super Kings for 17 years, leading the team to five IPL titles, a remarkable achievement.

However, Fleming will continue to serve as the head coach of England’s limited-overs (white-ball) teams. Meanwhile, the 35-year-old Root, who captained the Test team from 2017 to 2022, is England’s most successful Test captain with 27 wins in 65 matches. Upon his appointment, Fleming expressed great enthusiasm, stating, “This is one of the most prestigious roles in world cricket, and I feel honored to take on this responsibility.”

Fleming will not assume coaching duties for the upcoming Test series against Pakistan starting August 19. During this period, assistant coach Marcus Trescothick will act as interim head coach. Fleming will spend some time with his family in New Zealand and plans to travel to the UK toward the end of the summer. He will then focus on preparing for the Test series against South Africa scheduled for December. Root has welcomed the opportunity to work with Fleming and sees it as a significant inspiration. He commented, “Fleming has long demonstrated exceptional leadership skills and a deep understanding of the game. I am excited to work alongside him and contribute to creating a winning environment.”
