During the expedition to climb Broad Peak, an 8,047-meter mountain in Pakistan, renowned mountaineer Nirmal Purja along with nine others went missing. Among those missing, six are Nepali climbers, and search and rescue operations are currently underway. Kathmandu, 15 Shrawan.
Before the climb, Nirmal Purja expressed on social media, “Broad Peak, I only ask for a safe climb and a safe return, nothing more.” According to him, there was no plan to attempt Broad Peak before departing for Pakistan. He stated, “The plan was only to climb Gasherbrum II.”
However, considering his record of climbing peaks above 8,000 meters, if he had succeeded in summiting Broad Peak this time, it would have cemented a world record for climbing all 14 peaks over 8,000 meters twice without supplemental oxygen, except for Cho Oyu. He also mentioned that he has never viewed his achievements as a competition with anyone else. On his Facebook page, he reflected on the hardships faced during his ascent of 14 peaks, sharing prayers amid the challenges.
