16 Shrawan, Kathmandu – Scott Edwards has stepped down as captain of the Netherlands cricket team after four years in charge. The Netherlands Cricket Board (KNCB) announced on Saturday the appointment of all-rounder Bas de Leede as the new captain across all formats.
Edwards informed the team in the dressing room of his decision to relinquish the captaincy following last night’s conclusion of the League 2 series. Alongside this, Bas de Leede was officially named the new captain.
Edwards took over the captaincy in June 2022, succeeding Pieter Seelar, and led the Netherlands to significant international cricket successes.
During his tenure, he captained the team in four consecutive ICC World Cup tournaments, steering them to historic victories against powerhouse teams including South Africa, West Indies, and Bangladesh.
Aside from his leadership, Edwards also served as wicketkeeper and emerged as a reliable middle-order batsman for the team. He scored 35 half-centuries in international cricket, bolstering the Netherlands’ batting strength.
Recently, in the home series against Nepal and Namibia, Edwards scored half-centuries in three matches. Although the Netherlands won three of the games, they lost the final match held last night.
“I believe I can continue contributing as a player for a long time, but for now, I have decided to step down as captain. I want to thank my team for their consistent support,” Edwards said.
The captaincy responsibility now passes to 26-year-old all-rounder Bas de Leede. After a stellar performance in the 2023 ICC World Cup Qualifiers, de Leede is viewed as a key player of the new generation in Netherlands cricket.
To date, Bas de Leede has accumulated nearly 2,300 runs across international One Day Internationals and T20s, along with approximately 90 wickets.
With his leadership, the Netherlands is expected to gain more opportunities and competitive performances against full member nations.
Expressing gratitude toward the board for the captaincy appointment, Bas de Leede praised Edwards’ leadership, stating, “Edwards is an excellent leader who has led us to fantastic victories at various times. He believes in all of us and inspires us to succeed individually as well. Many thanks to him.”
