Drone with Explosives Found at Germany’s Leipzig-Halle Airport Sparks Suspicion of Russian Involvement

Security measures have been intensified at Germany’s Leipzig-Halle Airport after a drone equipped with explosives was discovered near a Ukrainian cargo plane. Police, with the assistance of a bomb disposal unit, safely defused the explosive device attached to the drone. A thorough investigation into the incident is currently underway, and the Ukrainian ambassador has expressed suspicions that Russia may be involved.

On August 7, authorities reported that the drone carrying explosives was found close to a Ukrainian cargo aircraft during its takeoff. Although the plane collided with the unidentified object, it managed to land safely. Following the incident, all flights to Leipzig-Halle Airport were diverted to other airports for several hours.

German police stated that the bomb disposal team successfully neutralized the explosive device on the drone. Located in eastern Germany, this airport functions as a critical logistics hub for both the German military and NATO, facilitating the transportation of military supplies. Antonov Airlines of Ukraine also operates from this location.

Ukraine’s ambassador to Germany, Oleksii Makeiev, voiced concerns over potential Russian involvement, saying, “Who else could be responsible besides Russia?” However, German officials have not yet released any evidence directly linking Russia to the incident. Since the onset of the Ukraine conflict, the presence of unmanned drones around airports in Germany and other European countries has been steadily increasing.
