The body of a mountaineer who died in harsh Himalayan conditions close to the summit of Mount Everest has remained stranded in the snow for the past 30 years. Known among the climbing community as ‘Green Boots’ due to the distinctive color of his footwear, the climber has become a grim landmark.
Dorje Morup from Ladakh in Indian-administered Kashmir departed in May 1996 with an Indian expedition from the Tibetan side to ascend Everest. After reaching the summit, he and two companions were caught in a sudden snowstorm during their descent. While Morup’s body has been located, the whereabouts of the other two climbers remain unknown.
According to sources, ‘Green Boots’ has effectively become a signpost for climbers tackling Everest. The Indian government is now seeking rescuers to recover his body and repatriate it to his family.
