Around the world, there is a tradition of making silver pickles, especially in Jaipur, India. This is not an ordinary kitchen pickle but is prepared as a traditional royal delicacy. Wealthy individuals include it in their kitchens for special guests and foreign tourists.
Recently, the Indian reality show ‘MasterChef’ brought silver pickle into the spotlight. On the show, Charu Soni from Jaipur prepared and presented silver pickle in the presence of Bollywood actress Shilpa Shetty. She mentioned that she received information about it from an Ayurvedic practitioner. According to Soni, its history is linked to the kings and maharajas of Rajasthan. It was used on special occasions and considered extremely beneficial from an Ayurvedic viewpoint. In ancient times, Ayurvedic physicians made this special chutney for the health and strength enhancement of the royal family. The pickle was prepared with gold and silver ashes combined with almonds, raisins, and other dried fruits. Nowadays, it is made by blending these ingredients in a modern way. Soni added that preparing one kilogram of this pickle costs between 60,000 to 70,000 Indian Rupees. It is not available on the market generally and is only made for special royal ceremonies.
