Indian spinner Manav Suthar took 10 wickets as India secured a commanding 165-run victory over Sri Lanka in the first Test match. After posting 462 runs in their first innings, India bowled out Sri Lanka for 284, gaining a lead of 178 runs. Suthar claimed 4 wickets in the first innings and 6 in the second. During the second session on the fifth day, Suthar dismissed Sri Lanka for 206 runs, sealing India’s 165-run triumph. India had set Sri Lanka a target of 372 runs after scoring 193 in their second innings. In the first innings, Suthar bowled 21.4 overs, conceding 76 runs and taking four wickets, supported by Ravindra Jadeja who took three wickets.
The 24-year-old had a memorable debut, claiming a wicket with his very first ball in Test cricket. He strengthened India’s grip by dismissing Sri Lankan batsmen Ravindu Rasantha and Dhananjaya de Silva. Suthar delivered 74 ‘big turn’ deliveries in the first innings, surpassing the figures of experienced Indian spinners Jadeja and Kuldeep Yadav.
In the second innings, Suthar bowled 23.4 overs, giving away 55 runs while taking 6 wickets. Prasidh Krishna took 2 wickets, while Mohammed Siraj and Ravindra Jadeja each claimed one. Earlier, Suthar had taken 7 wickets in his debut Test against Afghanistan, with figures of 6/33 and 1/29. This win also earned India 12 points in the ICC World Test Championship.
