September 19, 2022, Kathmandu – U.S. President Donald Trump has announced a three-day postponement of the proposed 50 percent tariff on goods imported from Canada. In a post on the social media platform Truth Social, Trump stated, “I have delayed the 50 percent tariff on Canada for three days. This tariff was set to take effect tomorrow morning. The decision was made after finalizing documents and reaching an understanding between Canada and the United States.”
This announcement came less than two hours before the new tariffs on Canadian goods were to be imposed. The dispute between the two countries had long been ongoing, revolving around tariffs on American automobiles and restrictions imposed by various Canadian provinces on the sale of American alcohol. President Trump and Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney held two rounds of talks this week. Negotiators from both sides have been engaged in continuous discussions since July. Trump had even warned against implementing the new tariffs before August 19. Additionally, Carney mentioned in a letter publicized on the social media platform X, “Significant progress has been made in the negotiations, but some important tasks remain.”
