Donald Trump has declared the Strait of Hormuz as “new American territory” and released a map to support this claim. However, Iran has rejected Trump’s assertion, maintaining that it still controls the waters of the Strait of Hormuz.
According to CNN, over the past two weeks, more than 80 percent of maritime traffic through the Strait of Hormuz has been routed via the Oman side.
Kathmandu, September 19 – US President Donald Trump shared a map of the Strait of Hormuz on his social media platform Truth Social on Tuesday, proclaiming the area as American territory. The graphic highlighted the waters between Iran and Oman, labeled as “New American Territory.” Earlier at an event in New York, Trump stated plans to declare the Strait of Hormuz American territory after defeating Iran.
Iran has firmly dismissed Trump’s claim, reiterating its control over the Strait of Hormuz. Mohsen Rezaei, head of Iran’s Supreme National Security Council, stated that the Strait will remain closed until the US ends its war and blockade, returns frozen Iranian assets, and agrees to ceasefires in Lebanon, Gaza, and other regions.
While CNN reports that Iran has lost control over significant parts of the Strait of Hormuz, the ongoing struggle for dominance in this strategic waterway has made it a focal point of Iranian-American conflict. Both countries have claimed to maintain strong influence over the strait in recent months. However, recent data indicate that despite a robust US naval presence, Iran’s control over this vital maritime route has markedly diminished.
