KATHMANDU, September 23 – A magnitude 5.9 earthquake struck eastern Japan on Sunday morning, shaking areas including Tokyo, local media reported. According to the Japan Meteorological Agency, the earthquake occurred at a depth of 70 kilometers in the southern part of Ibaraki Prefecture. Meanwhile, the United States Geological Survey (USGS) measured the magnitude at 5.8.
The quake injured at least five people across Ibaraki, Chiba, and Saitama prefectures. Local authorities are still collecting information as more injuries are possible. The earthquake caused delays in some local train services, including the express train connecting Tokyo and Narita Airport; however, the Shinkansen bullet trains continued to operate normally.
The tremor also ruptured an underground water pipe in Tokyo’s Koto district and disrupted electricity supply to approximately 460 households. Power was restored by Sunday morning. Officials confirmed there is no tsunami threat and reported no abnormal conditions at Japan’s nuclear power plants.
