In the Dar-es-Salam area of Conakry, the capital of Guinea, a massive pile of garbage collapsed following heavy rains, resulting in the deaths of 30 people and injuring 22 others. Among the injured, six are in critical condition. Rescue operations continue amid fears that more individuals remain trapped under the debris. The Guinean government has deployed military personnel and security forces to assist, while Prime Minister Amadou Oury Bah inspected the disaster site.
The incident occurred around 2 a.m. local time. According to government officials, the accumulation of garbage gave way suddenly due to the intense rainfall. There are concerns that additional victims could still be buried beneath the rubble. Authorities have mobilized a large number of security personnel to aid in relief and rescue efforts.
Speaking to local media, a woman recounted, “My five children died.” Officials warn that the death toll may rise as more people could be trapped underground. Prime Minister Amadou Oury Bah visited the scene to assess the situation firsthand. Earlier, local leader Lansiné Sillah told news agency AFP, “There is a strong suspicion that a large number of people have been affected by this accident.” He confirmed that 18 bodies have so far been recovered and sent to the morgue.
