The fire broke out within the Kadutu community, causing extensive loss of life and property. Injured survivors have been transported to nearby hospitals. Video footage and photographs show children lying painfully on hospital floors, while images shared on social media depict some young children found unconscious on the ground.

Citing a Reuters agency eyewitness, though the fire was brought under control by afternoon, smoke continues to emanate from zinc sheets and debris. Bukavu, located in the hilly area of South Kivu province, is one of Congo’s most densely populated cities. In February last year, the M23 rebel group established control over Bukavu.
