An Indonesian passenger ship that encountered trouble in the Java Sea has resulted in the death of one passenger and the rescue of 102 others, according to an official. The vessel, carrying 243 people, lost contact due to severe weather conditions.
Indonesia’s search and rescue agency has launched operations to locate the missing ship. The search for remaining passengers is ongoing. The ship, named ‘Bhargo Transport 8,’ was traveling from Surabaya to Banjarmasin in South Kalimantan. It was last contacted around 2 a.m. local time on Sunday, approximately 150 kilometers south of Banjarmasin.
Rescue efforts at the incident site include deployment of ships and helicopters. Other vessels navigating the Java Sea have been urged to report any information regarding the passengers’ conditions. Last month, a fire on a ship near Madura Island claimed five lives. The Indonesian archipelago, home to more than 17,000 islands, relies heavily on maritime transport as the primary means of travel across the region.
