Clashes and Tear Gas Erupt at LGBTQ+ Rally in Turkey Following Raids on Activists’ Homes

In Turkey, clashes broke out between protesters and police at a rally organized in response to raids on the homes of LGBTQ+ organizations and activists. The demonstration, held on Monday in the western province of Izmir, saw police deploying tear gas against participants.

The Turkish government has detained dozens of people under its ‘My Family is Safe’ campaign, which it promotes as a measure to protect family values and culture. However, human rights groups and opposition leaders accuse the campaign of being misused to target the LGBTQ+ community.

While homosexual relationships are not criminalized in Turkey, widespread prejudice against LGBTQ+ individuals persists. President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan has repeatedly labeled LGBTQ+ people as ‘deviant,’ claiming they contribute to a decline in birth rates.
