The United States and Denmark have agreed on a significant security pact concerning Greenland. This accord comes as a resolution to the diplomatic controversy sparked by US President Donald Trump’s threat to seize Greenland by force. Trump stated that the agreement grants the US “security and permanent control over all necessary aspects” of Greenland.
Denmark’s Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen described the pact as a measure that will “strengthen security in the Arctic and North Atlantic regions.” However, Trump has not publicly commented on the specific provisions of the agreement. The pact arises after Trump emphasized Greenland’s strategic geographic location and mineral resources as key reasons in his earlier threat to take over the territory.
On Truth Social, Trump asserted that the deal “costs the US nothing” and allows America “to ensure Greenland’s security and to undertake all necessary measures for its protection.” He also mentioned that the agreement prohibits any US competitor from establishing a military presence or making “sensitive investments” in Greenland without explicit written US approval.
Prime Minister Frederiksen confirmed that the agreement will be signed next week at the United Nations General Assembly. She stated, “This agreement will further bolster our shared security in the Arctic and North Atlantic regions.” The Chair of the Greenland government expressed happiness at participating in the agreement, saying, “This is in the interest of everyone.” US Secretary of State Marco Rubio called it a “historic agreement.”
