According to the office, if the intensity of the war remains steady, monthly costs could reach or exceed $300 million. Weapons expenses, accounting for $2.81 billion according to the latest report, represent the largest portion of the total US military costs.
The war has placed significant pressure on the US missile stockpile. European and NATO officials have highlighted the lack of missile defense systems as a serious problem driving up operational costs. The detailed report submitted to lawmakers by the US military includes expenditures related to warships, aircraft, and military base operations. Department of Defense figures indicate that the conflict has resulted in 18 US soldier deaths and more than 830 injuries to date.
