During talks with US President Donald Trump, Chinese President Xi Jinping called on the United States to oppose ‘Taiwan independence’ and to handle Taiwan affairs with caution. He stressed the need to expand cooperation between China and the US in fields including artificial intelligence (AI). At the White House meeting, Xi highlighted the importance of basing China-US relations on cooperation, managing competition within reasonable boundaries, and addressing disagreements to maintain stable relations. He also emphasized implementing the consensus reached in May this year to sustain stable economic and trade ties through expanded cooperation and reduced disputes.
Noting the strong AI capabilities of both nations, Xi pointed out the necessity of continuous dialogue on the risks and benefits of AI and joint efforts to prevent its misuse. He underscored that AI development must remain under human control and be human-centered. Clarifying China’s firm stance on national unification and safeguarding regional integrity regarding Taiwan, Xi urged the US to maintain a policy opposing ‘Taiwan independence,’ which he said would lay the foundation for strategic cooperation and bilateral development between China and the US.
President Trump praised Xi’s visit as excellent and emphasized the importance of continuing economic and trade dialogue. Highlighting recent achievements from discussions between both countries’ teams, he voiced the necessity of ongoing talks to improve trade agreements. Both leaders agreed to expand dialogue and cooperation in AI. The talks also covered international and regional issues including the Middle East, the Ukraine crisis, and the Korean Peninsula situation. Additionally, both sides agreed to cooperate on hosting the 2026 APEC Economic Leaders’ Meeting and the G20 Summit. This meeting marks the second encounter between the two leaders in less than six months during Xi’s three-day visit to the United States.
