For the ICC Cricket World Cup League 2 series against Nepal and Oman, Canada has revealed its 15-man squad. As noted, 36-year-old Hamza Tariq will lead the team as captain, while Shreyas Movva will fulfill the vice-captain role. This marks Hamza Tariq’s return to Canada’s One Day International (ODI) team after seven years. He made his ODI debut against Afghanistan in 2011 and played his last ODI match against the Netherlands in 2014.
Since Canada lost its ODI status in 2014, the team has played all 50-over matches with List A status. Hamza Tariq last played a 50-over game in the 2019 ICC World Cup Challenge League A. The wicketkeeper-batsman has scored 116 runs in seven ODIs and accumulated 558 runs in 36 List A matches.
Alongside Hamza Tariq, Canada’s squad includes Shreyas Movva, Yuvraj Samra, Aaron Johnson, Samit Gohil, Aditya Varadarajan, Harsh Thakker, Ajayveer Hundal, Akhil Kumar, Sukhjinder Singh, Sheel Patel, Kaleem Sana, Zahid Shirzad, Shivam Sharma, and Dilraj Deol. Notably, former captains Saad Bin Zafar and Nicholas Kirton are not part of this squad. This series holds significant implications for the League 2 standings of all three teams. Currently, Oman is fourth with 31 points from 28 matches, Canada is sixth with 25 points from 32 matches, and Nepal is seventh with 24 points from 32 matches.
