Nepal Advances to Asian Games Cricket Semifinals After Defeating Sri Lanka, Set to Face India

Nepal is set to compete against Sri Lanka in the men’s cricket quarterfinals of the Asian Games on Tuesday. With a victory, Nepal will advance to the semifinals for the first time in history and earn the chance to face India. However, if rain prevents the match from taking place, Sri Lanka, as the higher-ranked team, will automatically progress to the semifinals, ending Nepal’s campaign.

On October 12, in Kathmandu, Nepal is preparing for its quarterfinal clash against Sri Lanka in the 20th Asian Games men’s cricket event. A win would mark Nepal’s inaugural entry into the semifinals where it will meet India.

On Monday, rain caused the postponement of the quarterfinal match between India and Afghanistan. Due to their higher seed, India has already advanced directly to the semifinals. Similarly, Pakistan has moved into the final four after their match against Hong Kong was canceled due to rain.

Nepal secured its quarterfinal spot by finishing as the winner of Group ‘A.’ The team defeated Afghanistan during the group stage and maintained the top position despite the rain-affected match against Japan. However, the forecast for Tuesday in Japan indicates a high chance of rain. If the match between Nepal and Sri Lanka is unable to proceed because of weather conditions, Sri Lanka will be granted passage to the semifinals based on their higher ranking, ending Nepal’s campaign in the tournament.

Prior to this, Nepal had never advanced beyond the quarterfinals in the Asian Games. In the previous edition, Nepal was eliminated by India at the quarterfinal stage.
