Detailed Information on Relief and Compensation Arrangements for Natural Disaster Victims

This year, studies are underway to provide compensation funds and to construct temporary and permanent housing for individuals affected by various natural disasters, including the Bhote Koshi Trishuli flood and continuous rainfall from October 8 to 11, according to the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Authority. The low-pressure system that arrived from the Bay of Bengal severely impacted western Nepal last week, and continuous rainfall has caused at least 30 deaths, the Authority reported.
During this period, 1,923 families were directly affected: 221 by landslides, 588 by floods, and 314 by heavy rainfall, the Authority stated. Additionally, 234 houses were completely damaged and 150 houses partially damaged. Local officials reported that floods in the Kali Gandaki River caused erosion along various segments of the Maldhunga, Beni, Jomsom, and Korala road sections. The flood damage to roads and bridges in the Myagdi district has disrupted trade routes at the Korala border crossing with China.
In Manang district, known for low rainfall, heavy precipitation triggered a landslide at the district headquarters, Chame Bazaar, blocking the Marsyangdi River. The Gandaki Provincial Police Office reported that 13 houses suffered total damage and 15 houses were partially damaged by flooding. Damage to the Chame Bazaar bridge has also blocked the road leading to Upper Manang, local officials said. Previously, a severe flood in Trishuli, Rasuwa, resulted in 1,453 deaths and 5,285 people still missing, according to the Authority. Approximately 33,000 displaced individuals were affected by that event. Compensation distribution for temporary shelter has begun, alongside ongoing studies for private housing reconstruction for affected families.
Authority spokesperson Shanti Mahat explained, “In the event of large-scale damage such as the Rasuwa floods, the Authority conducts needs assessments and determines the extent of damage and reconstruction plans collectively under the leadership of the National Planning Commission through the PDNA (Post Disaster Needs Assessment).” She added, “However, detailed damage assessments are still necessary for the western districts affected by continuous rainfall. Damage to houses will be categorized in order to proceed with new constructions.” According to the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Authority, under current legal provisions, an equal amount of compensation is provided to all victims in cases involving human loss following any disaster.
