Call for Review of Two-Day Weekend Policy Impacting School Academic Activities

Badimalika Municipality has formally requested the Ministry of Education to provide clear policy guidance on community schools’ leave management systems. Mayor Amar Khadka highlighted that the two-day weekend and holidays have reduced school instructional days, adversely affecting the quality of learning. The municipality pointed out the difficulty in meeting the minimum of 220 teaching days annually and suggested that allowing only one day off per week would be more practical educationally.
Dhangadhi, 3 Baisakh – After the federal government implemented two public holidays per week (Saturday and Sunday), the municipality reports challenges in fulfilling the minimum annual requirement of 220 school days. Addressing the ministry secretary, Mayor Khadka stated that the current leave system significantly decreases actual instructional days at schools, directly impacting educational quality, student learning outcomes, and consistent study routines.
The letter cited Rule 84(5) of the Education Regulations, 2059, which legally mandates that schools must operate for at least 220 days per academic session. However, the existing holiday structure has created practical obstacles in complying with this requirement. Based on this, Mayor Khadka concluded that the model practiced by local governments, which allows only one day off per week—specifically Saturdays—would be more feasible and effective from an educational standpoint.
