68 Squatter Families in Thapathali Coordinate with Government for Relocation

The government has been continuously working to clear settlements located along riverbanks and hazardous public lands in the Kathmandu Valley. In Thapathali, 68 families have already coordinated with the authorities, with their details being collected as preparations are underway to accommodate them in various hotels. Genuine squatter families are planned to be relocated within two weeks to government apartments located in Ward No. 1 of Nagarjun Municipality.

Kathmandu, 12 Baisakh – The government continues its efforts to vacate settlements situated on riverbanks, risky public areas, and government land across the Kathmandu Valley. As part of this initiative, the settlement in Ward No. 11, Thapathali, has been vacated, while similar operations are ongoing in Gairigaun of Ward No. 9 and Shantinagar of Ward No. 31. Furthermore, preparations are underway to clear unauthorized settlements in Gothatar Buddha Chowk of Ward No. 8 and Manohara Tol of Ward No. 9 within Kageshwari Manohara Municipality.

According to data from the Kathmandu Valley Development Authority, there are a total of 871 unauthorized households distributed as follows: 476 in Shantinagar, 162 in Gairigaun, 143 in Thapathali, 77 in Gothatar, and 13 in Manohara Tol. During the clearance operations, Nepal Police and security personnel from the metropolitan office have directly assisted in lifting and transporting belongings. The cooperation of the inhabitants has ensured that the Thapathali settlement was vacated peacefully and amicably.

So far, 68 families in Thapathali have come into contact with the government, while coordination processes are ongoing in other locations, according to the Prime Minister’s Office. The families who have established contact have been taken to Dashrath Rangashala for registration, and arrangements are being made to house them in various hotels across Kathmandu. Domestic belongings are currently being securely stored at the Radhaswami Satsang Bhais Nepal facility located in Sundarighat, Kirtipur. Starting tomorrow, the government will begin the process of verifying whether these families are genuine squatters. Those confirmed as legitimate squatters will be settled within two weeks in government apartments in Ward No. 1, Nagarjun Municipality.
