Senator Escapes Police During Arrest Attempt
Published
Philippine Senator Ronald dela Rosa has taken refuge in his Senate office after evading police who attempted to arrest him under an International Criminal Court (ICC) warrant, leading to tightened security measures at the upper house building in the Philippines.
Following a two-day standoff, gunfire was reported at the scene. Authorities have not disclosed who fired the shots but confirmed there were no casualties.
Officials confirmed that Senator dela Rosa is safe and is under protection provided by security personnel. He is a former police chief.
The senator has requested security assurances from the Senate and has petitioned the Supreme Court to prevent local authorities from enforcing the ICC arrest warrant against him.
Dela Rosa faces allegations of crimes against humanity linked to the drug enforcement campaign launched during the administration of former President Rodrigo Duterte.
The ICC accuses him of involvement in dozens of killings, charges he vehemently denies.
Former Philippine President Duterte was arrested and transferred to The Hague in March 2025, where he remains.
