Nepali Congress: Can Bidya Bhandari’s Return Prevent KP Sharma Oli’s Ouster from UML?

Debate continues regarding the involvement of Vice President Bishnu Paudel in the removal of CPN-UML Chairman KP Sharma Oli from his post. Paudel has not publicly commented on the matter. In a brief interaction, he stated, “I will discuss this with you later.” Reports have emerged suggesting that Paudel and General Secretary Shankar Pokharel have reached an agreement on changing the party leadership. Vice President Prithvi Subba Gurung has also concluded that Oli can no longer be retained as the party leader.
These three leaders, known as Oli’s ‘charioteers’ during the general convention, had attempted to block his leadership. Former President Bidya Devi Bhandari, who had her party membership suspended, also expressed views that Oli should relinquish his leadership. There is growing discussion within the party about Bhandari’s possible return. Vice President Paudel remarked, “The official agenda has not been disclosed; I cannot comment at this time.” Deputy General Secretary Lekhraj Bhatt also indicated that no discussions have taken place yet.
There has been significant response following Bhandari being named the chief guest. According to leader Karn Thapa, two factions exist within UML: one advocates that Bhandari should leave the party under all circumstances; the other supports persuading her to resign amicably. Thapa added, “There is also a small faction that believes she has no alternative.” The issue of Bidya Bhandari’s reinstatement or leadership comeback is expected to continue fueling calls for Oli’s ousting from the party.
Pressure is also mounting on Prachanda to step down from leadership. He has eliminated that possibility by merging with Madhav Nepal’s faction. Since Prachanda keeps emphasizing the necessity of leftist unity, some interpret this as a “strategy to dodge pressure for leadership change.”
