Heatwave in Telangana, India Claims 16 Lives

May 23, Kathmandu – In the Indian state of Telangana, an intense heatwave and scorching hot winds, known locally as “loo,” have resulted in the deaths of 16 people. The state’s Revenue Minister, Ponguleti Srinivas Reddy, provided this update on Saturday. The government has announced relief measures for the families of the deceased.

Following a meeting with officials to discuss the situation caused by the heatwave, Minister Reddy informed the press that, based on reports from district collectors, the highest number of fatalities—four—occurred in the Jayashankar Bhupalpally district. Subsequently, three deaths were reported in each of Warangal Urban, Karimnagar, and Nizamabad districts. Additionally, one death each was recorded in Jogulamba Gadwal, Ranga Reddy, and Suryapet districts, according to Minister Reddy. The state government has decided to provide compensation of 400,000 Indian Rupees to the families of each victim.
