China Urges India Not to Intervene in Dalai Lama Reincarnation Issue

China has urged India not to provide any platform for Tibetan independence activities and to refrain from interfering in the Dalai Lama’s reincarnation process. The Central Tibetan Administration is set to hold the oath-taking ceremony of Penpa Tsering as the new Sikyong on May 27. The 14th Dalai Lama had entrusted the right to identify his next reincarnation to the ‘Gaden Phodrang Trust.’

China has requested India not to offer any platform supporting “Tibetan independence” activities and warned India on Monday not to interfere in the reincarnation process of the upcoming Dalai Lama. The Central Tibetan Administration will host the oath-taking ceremony of Penpa Tsering as the new Sikyong on May 27.

Yu Jing, spokesperson for the Chinese Embassy in India, shared China’s position in a post on the social media platform X. She stated that no sovereign nation around the world recognizes the Central Tibetan Administration. Yu Jing asserted that the Dalai Lama’s reincarnation follows religious and historical traditions and requires approval from the central government.

Last year, on his 90th birthday, the Dalai Lama announced the continuation of the Dalai Lama institution and reiterated that China would have no role in seeking his next reincarnation. The Dalai Lama’s office made it clear that no external party has the authority to intervene in this process.
