Three Workers Die After Falling into Sea During Lifeboat Repairs in Malaysia

Three workers died after falling into the sea from a vessel operated by Malaysia’s state energy company, Petronas. The incident occurred on Sunday afternoon while workers were repairing a lifeboat aboard the company’s floating storage and offloading vessel (FSO) named ‘FSO Sepat,’ anchored near the eastern coastal state of Terengganu. During the repair work, a hook securing the lifeboat unexpectedly detached, causing the lifeboat to fall into the sea, resulting in one young worker sustaining serious injuries.

The company confirmed the incident in a statement, reporting that it took place around 12:50 pm on Sunday. Another worker was also seriously injured in the accident. All four rescued workers were transported to the hospital, but three were declared dead en route. The injured worker is currently receiving treatment at Sultanah Nur Zahirah Hospital. In the statement, Petronas said, “An investigation is underway in coordination with relevant authorities to determine the cause of the incident.” Local police reported that the workers had boarded the lifeboat to carry out repairs and were in the process of lowering it to the sea surface when the securing hook suddenly gave way. The lifeboat dropped straight into the sea after the rope snapped.
