May 25, Kathmandu – Germany’s Alexander Zverev ended a long wait by winning his first Grand Slam title.

In the men’s singles final of the French Open held on Sunday, Zverev defeated Italy’s Flavio Cobolli in a gripping five-set match 6-1, 4-6, 6-4, 6-7 (5-7), 6-1 to claim his career’s first Grand Slam crown.

At 29, this was Zverev’s fourth Grand Slam final. After losing in his previous three finals, he finally ended the streak in Paris.

The second seed Zverev dominated the opening set. However, tenth-seeded Cobolli, making his first Grand Slam final appearance, bounced back with a second-set win, signaling a tight contest between the two competitors.

In the fourth set, Zverev faced pressure, committing a few crucial double faults and struggling with cramping issues. Nevertheless, he delivered an outstanding performance in the decisive fifth set, building a 3-0 lead and ultimately securing the championship.

After winning the final point, Zverev collapsed emotionally on the court. With this victory, he became the first male player other than Jannik Sinner and Carlos Alcaraz to win a Grand Slam in 2023.

Following early exits of Sinner, absence of Alcaraz, and Novak Djokovic’s departure in the third round, Zverev emerged as a leading contender for the title and successfully lived up to expectations.
