Dispute Erupts After Rashwapa Convention in Baglung

Although Poonam Sharma was elected chairperson at the National Independent Party (Rashwapa) convention in Baglung, controversy has arisen over the leadership selection. A dissatisfied faction, including a chairperson candidate named Dhalendra Majhi, has rejected the new leadership and filed a complaint with the party’s central office. Following the complaint, Rashwapa has placed Baglung among the districts where the convention is considered incomplete.

May 8, Kathmandu – The district convention held on Saturday unanimously selected Poonam Sharma as chairperson. However, dissatisfied members have rejected her leadership and submitted a grievance to the party headquarters. Dhalendra Majhi, one of the chairperson aspirants, stated, “She is not someone who has worked within the party’s organization before. A new person was brought in and made chairperson. I do not know her. We have informed the party center about this matter.”

The first convention, held in the presence of federal parliament members Som Sharma and Sushil Khadka, announced Poonam Sharma as the chairperson. Incumbent chairperson Mahendra Khadka confirmed the unanimous selection and expressed confusion over the dispute. He said, “At that time, all colleagues were ready for a unanimous decision. I do not understand why the controversy has arisen now.” Rashwapa had already decided not to hold conventions in Manang and Mustang districts of Gandaki Province. Following the complaint, Baglung has now been added to the list of districts where conventions will not be conducted.
