June 13, Kathmandu – The gender minority community in Kathmandu organized a Pride Parade. On Saturday, participants marched from Ratnapark through Sundhara and Dharhara areas, showcasing the pride of the gender minority community. The event concluded with a musical program at Khulamanch. The Pride Parade, organized by Nepal’s transgender community, also saw participation from some international attendees.
Globally, the LGBTQ community holds Pride Parades every June, voicing their rights often through satirical expressions. The Pride Parade is viewed by the gender minority community as a public rally or celebration advocating for their rights, equality, identity, and respect. Its primary goals include raising awareness against discrimination, demanding equal rights and social acceptance, celebrating community identity and achievements, and promoting diversity and inclusion.
Participants in the Pride Parade typically carry colorful rainbow flags, engage in cultural performances, deliver speeches, and participate in various creative activities. This tradition originated following the Stonewall Rights Movement in 1969. Today, Pride Parades are held in numerous countries and cities worldwide.
