Dr. Shekhar Koirala, a leader of the Nepali Congress, has warned of the emergence of autocratic tendencies within the party. He emphasized the need for the Nepali Congress to continue following the national unity and reconciliation policies advocated by BP Koirala. Kathmandu, May 14.
Koirala stated that despite the Nepali Congress being established to promote democracy and end autocracy, autocratic practices are on the rise within the party. He observed that democracy is currently at one of its weakest points in history and underscored the increasing necessity of adhering to the national unity and reconciliation policies adopted by BP Koirala in 1977 (2033 BS).
Addressing the Koshi Province-level assembly held in Biratnagar, Koirala remarked, “To strengthen Nepal’s nationalism, sovereignty, territorial integrity, and democracy, cooperation and unity among all forces in Nepal is essential.” He also shared that during discussions with Gagan Thapa, five key points he raised were accepted.
Following Gagan Thapa’s threats of party disciplinary action against colleagues, Koirala spoke about the five points he publicly shared, emphasizing that the Nepali Congress cannot progress without consensus. He stated, “We must move forward through agreement, cooperation, and unity, as Girija Prasad Koirala advocated.” Koirala further affirmed his commitment to preventing any split within the party under any circumstances.
