Nestory Irankunda has become Australia’s youngest player to score in a FIFA World Cup. Born in a refugee camp in Tanzania, Irankunda is the first Australia player born abroad to score at a World Cup. Starting his professional football career at 15, he secured a contract with German club Bayern Munich.

During the FIFA World Cup 2026 Group D match between Australia and Turkey, at the 27th minute, Turkey was mounting continuous attacks. The young star Erda Gulier missed a prime scoring opportunity, disappointing Turkish supporters. However, Australian fans breathed a sigh of relief as 20-year-old Nestory Irankunda took control of the ball. Accelerating past defenders, he advanced towards the penalty area and struck a shot with his right foot that went straight into the net. Nestory’s life journey began there; he was born in 2006 in that camp.

At just three months old, his family was resettled in Australia. Growing up in Adelaide, football became an integral part of Nestory’s life. He made his professional debut with Adelaide United at age 15. Known for his speed and aggressive style of play, he quickly gained recognition as a promising young talent. After signing with Bayern Munich, he has been given regular playing opportunities with Watford in England.
