Amid months of ongoing conflict and tension, the US and Iran have reached an initial consensus on a landmark agreement. A senior Iranian official informed Reuters that the agreement covers critical issues including Iran’s nuclear program, the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz, and the lifting of US sanctions affecting Iranian oil exports. Following this preliminary consensus, both sides will engage in negotiations within 60 days to agree on a final detailed version.
According to Iranian officials, the initial agreement notably includes provisions on reopening the Strait of Hormuz and Iranian ports. Upon signing, Iran will reopen the Strait of Hormuz to all commercial shipping, which it had recently closed. In response, the US will remove its naval blockade on Iranian ports. The process to lift the blockade is expected to be fully completed within 30 days.
The US has also committed to not imposing any new sanctions on Iran. After the final agreement, all US and United Nations sanctions on Iran will be lifted. Furthermore, the US has agreed to release up to $2.5 billion of Iranian frozen assets. These funds will be unfrozen through a combination of direct cash transfers, regional cooperation mechanisms, and financial credit lines.
