Following Keir Starmer’s resignation as UK Prime Minister, the prospective candidate for the position won a by-election to become a Member of Parliament.
Two significant events on Monday signaled crucial forthcoming outcomes.
After Starmer set his departure date, Wes Streeting announced his support for Andy Burnham as the Prime Ministerial candidate.
Former Greater Manchester Mayor Burnham secured his parliamentary seat by winning a by-election on Monday.
This development points to who might succeed Starmer as the next Prime Minister of the UK.
Burnham is on track to become the UK’s fifth Prime Minister within four years.
Images of Burnham, newly elected MP for Makerfield, have become popular, showing him smiling amongst hundreds of Labour MPs, while Keir Starmer and his wife appeared emotional.
The presence of Chancellor Rachel Reeves at Burnham’s event was also notable, especially as she had not been seen with senior ministers during the resignation planning.
Several senior leaders expect to continue their roles in the upcoming government. The focus now shifts to these new figures exercising influence.
Supporters of Reeves argue she retains market confidence and could assist Burnham, often believed to be crucial for maintaining stability.
However, analysts suggest the likelihood of Burnham retaining Reeves is low, given her closeness to the Starmer government.
Some analysts predict that Streeting might replace Reeves, but Streeting has declined any offer from Burnham so far.
Following Monday’s events, various questions have arisen regarding the Labour Party and Burnham.
Remarkably, having not been an MP just a week ago, Burnham could become Prime Minister within a month.
A minister indicated that Burnham previously contested Labour Party leadership twice but was defeated.
So, what is the current appeal of Andy Burnham?
In summary, he appears to be the triumphant figure as Starmer steps down.
Moreover, he managed to defeat the Reform UK party candidate in the local by-election, a very challenging victory to enter Parliament.
However, many are uncertain about Burnham’s plans once in power. One insider remarked, “Labour MPs are boarding a train to an unknown destination.”
During the by-election, he managed to put forward some proposals.
However, these proposals were limited to local issues since winning that election was the priority.
Commenting on Starmer’s resignation on social media, he said people want to see “progress on economic growth, cost of living, public services, housing, and opportunities for future generations.”
But delivering on these promises will face serious tests moving forward.
Lack of clear planning and the limited time frame has unsettled some within the party. Some Labour MPs have spoken to the Prime Minister’s chief secretary suggesting Starmer reconsider contesting against Burnham again.
However, close confidants say this possibility remains low, though not entirely dismissed by Starmer himself.
The next crucial moment will be when Burnham publicly presents his clear policies and long-term vision.
