Alphonso Davies: Captain of Canada’s World Cup Team, but His Story Did Not Begin in Canada
Kathmandu. Alphonso Davies… Thousands of supporters chant his name in stadiums. While the national anthem plays, he stands at the forefront of his team. Competing against some of the world’s best football players, today’s victory is Canada’s victory, and his success is Canada’s pride. However, his journey did not begin in Canada. Although he is Canada’s captain, he was not born there. Twenty-five years ago, he had no homeland or home; he had only a life saved from war. Liberia’s civil war took everything from his family. He was a refugee who has now risen to captain the powerful nation of Canada. Captain Alphonso Davies’ life story is nothing short of a movie, and his journey rivals that of any hero.
The war that changed everything began with the civil war in 1989, which altered the existence and direction of millions of families. The war not only divided the country but also shattered thousands of lives. Villages were destroyed, people died, and millions of citizens were displaced. Davies’ parents ultimately made a difficult choice: they left their home, their country, and their dreams behind — and even their memories — just to save their lives. They found refuge in Ghana, where they took shelter in the Buduburam refugee camp. It was in this camp on November 2, 2000, that Alphonso Davies was born. He was born in a place that was not his country, not in a well-equipped hospital. This was a place where people did not build a future but struggled to preserve one. Every morning began with new uncertainties, and no one could predict what the next day would bring.
Thus began the first chapter of Davies’ life. He does not recall much of his early childhood, but the hardships his parents endured shaped his entire life. They yearned for their children not to endure the life they had suffered and were willing to face any difficulty for it — which ultimately led them to Canada. A new country, a new start. When Davies was five, his family’s life took a significant turn. Canada accepted them as refugees. Around 2006, after arriving in Canada, they began a new life in Edmonton, Alberta. However, their lives did not change overnight; although they were far from war, economic struggles remained. A new battle was yet to be fought.
