June 25, Kathmandu – A powerful earthquake struck the South American nation of Venezuela on Wednesday.
Within seconds, two strong tremors measuring 7.2 and 7.5 in magnitude caused widespread building collapses across the country, including the capital city Caracas. Authorities fear extensive human casualties and major physical destruction.
According to the U.S. Geological Survey, the second, more powerful earthquake followed approximately 40 seconds after the first. Both quakes were centered in the western part of Caracas.
Thousands of residents immediately evacuated their homes and workplaces, gathering in the streets after the tremors began. Venezuela’s Interior Minister Diosdado Cabello confirmed some buildings and homes collapsed and urged citizens to remain alert and stay outdoors.
Early estimates suggest a 44 percent possibility that the death toll could exceed 10,000; however, official casualty figures have not been released as of the time this report was prepared.
The earthquake struck at 6:40 p.m. local time. The day was a national holiday in Venezuela, meaning many people were at home.
The tremors were felt throughout the entire country and reportedly extended to neighboring Colombia’s capital, Bogotá, according to international media. Rescue and search operations are currently underway.
