West Bengal Chief Minister Announces Implementation of Uniform Civil Code in the State
West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari has announced plans to implement the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) in his state. Speaking to reporters in Kolkata, Chief Minister Adhikari stated that the necessary procedures to introduce the UCC in West Bengal will be initiated, with detailed information to be presented in the state assembly on Monday.
According to Chief Minister Adhikari, a high-level committee headed by a retired judge will be formed to draft the UCC. He clarified that the process will be completed in line with the legal framework and procedures previously adopted by states such as Gujarat, Uttarakhand, and Assam.
As a new nationalist government takes charge in the state, Adhikari claimed there is a shift in priorities, emphasizing a commitment to advancing projects of national pride. During the press conference, the Chief Minister also strongly criticized the previous government of West Bengal.
He accused the prior administration of focusing mainly on corruption, nepotism, and pushing the state backwards economically and socially. Highlighting that the promotion of the historical legacies of great personalities such as Rabindranath Tagore and Bankim Chandra Chattopadhyay was never a priority for the former government, he asserted that these efforts will now be advanced with national pride. In this context, Chief Minister Adhikari also announced the construction of a national-level museum in the state on the occasion of the 150th anniversary of ‘Vande Mataram’.
