Eight-Team Qualifier Announced for 2028 Olympic Cricket: What Are Nepal’s Chances?

The International Olympic Committee has unveiled the selection process for cricket at the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics. In the men’s category, four teams will qualify directly based on T20 rankings, while the remaining spot will be decided through a global qualifying tournament. Nepal will only earn the opportunity to compete in the global qualifier if it ranks within the top 12 of the ICC T20 rankings by December 2026.

Cricket’s participation at the 2028 Olympics in Los Angeles marks its return after 128 years. Nepal now stands a chance to secure a spot through the global qualifiers. Both men’s and women’s tournaments will feature six teams each, with squads comprising 15 players per team.

In the men’s competition, four teams will directly qualify based on their ICC T20 International rankings. The host nation, the United States, will automatically earn a place if it is ranked within the top 15 in the ICC T20 rankings. The final remaining berth will be contested in a global qualifying event involving eight teams selected by rankings.

Nepal currently holds the 15th position in the ICC T20 rankings. Only if Nepal climbs into the top 12 by December 31, 2026, will it be eligible to participate in the qualifying tournament. The cricket matches are planned to be largely scheduled as doubleheaders, except on July 14 and 21.
