Unai Simón has surpassed the longstanding record of 518 consecutive minutes without conceding a goal, previously held by Italy’s Walter Zenga since 1990. On June 18 in Kathmandu, Spain’s goalkeeper Simón established a new record for the longest streak without conceding a goal in FIFA World Cup history.
After keeping a clean sheet in Spain’s 3-0 victory over Austria on Friday morning in the 2026 FIFA World Cup, Simón extended his record to 519 consecutive minutes without letting in a goal, setting an unparalleled mark.
Simón broke the previous record of 518 minutes set by Italy’s Walter Zenga in 1990. Throughout the currently ongoing World Cup, he has maintained clean sheets in all four matches Spain has played. In the 2022 Qatar World Cup, Simón conceded his last World Cup goal in the 51st minute during the final group stage match, which Spain lost 2-1 against Japan.
Although Spain was eliminated in the Round of 16 by Morocco after a 3-0 penalty shootout loss, Simón did not concede during regular time. In this 23rd edition of the World Cup held in North America, former champions Spain have remained undefeated, reaching the Round of 16 and positioning themselves as strong contenders for the title. Goalkeeper Simón has become the team’s defensive cornerstone contributing significantly to this success.
