Cape Verde Shines at FIFA World Cup 2026, Highlighting Special Ties with China

June 8, Kathmandu – The African island nation of Cape Verde made an impressive debut at the FIFA World Cup 2026, capturing the hearts of football fans worldwide. Behind this success lies a significant yet lesser-known role played by China. With a population just over half a million, Cape Verde advanced to the knockout stages in their first-ever World Cup appearance. Although they suffered a narrow 3–2 defeat against reigning champions Argentina in extra time during the Round of 32, their spirited performance won global admiration.

Particularly notable was the captain and goalkeeper, Jasimar Évora Dias (known as Voizinha), whose outstanding saves gained international recognition. It was revealed that the football boots he wore throughout the tournament were manufactured by a Chinese company. The shoes were produced by Chufeng Sports, located in Fujian Province in southeastern China. Before the tournament, the company had produced over 200 pairs and prepared an additional 20 pairs specifically for the World Cup. The brand became aware of this exposure only after Voizinha’s exceptional display went viral on social media. Since then, the company has received a surge of calls from fans eager to purchase the boots, according to the manufacturer.

Cape Verde’s World Cup journey also connects with China through other channels. The team conducted its pre-tournament training and historic qualifying matches at the national stadium in Praia, built with Chinese assistance. This 15,000-seat arena, constructed in 2014, was funded through China’s economic aid. Arlindo do Rosario, China’s ambassador to Cape Verde, emphasized China’s critical role in supporting the country’s sports development. He expressed hopes for further collaboration in renewable energy, the digital economy, tourism, and technology in the future.

Following their elimination from the World Cup, the Cape Verde squad issued a special message of thanks to Chinese supporters: “We are grateful to all Chinese citizens who supported us. Thank you for the love and support you have shown.”

Since establishing diplomatic relations in 1976, China has invested in various infrastructure projects in Cape Verde, including dams, university campuses, and government buildings, alongside the national stadium. Additionally, the story of businessman Lin Ji from China, who assisted Voizinha’s mother in obtaining a U.S. visa when her son traveled to America for the World Cup, gained considerable attention in China. These developments, combined with Voizinha’s global spotlight, have significantly increased interest in Cape Verde within Chinese media. Local reports noted that online searches related to Cape Verde soared by over 200% within 24 hours after the match against Argentina.

Last year, bilateral trade between China and Cape Verde amounted to approximately 116 million U.S. dollars, predominantly comprising Chinese exports to Cape Verde.
