Professor Dr. Vivek Baral has been appointed as the Vice Chancellor of Kathmandu University. A former student of the university, Baral is the first individual to rise through the ranks from student and faculty member to take on the responsibility of Vice Chancellor. He has unveiled plans to make the university internationally competitive by focusing on research and technology-driven administration.
Baral stated, “This is not just a personal achievement but a reflection of the opportunities and culture that Kathmandu University has provided to its students.” Having closely experienced the university’s academic environment and culture during his student years, he has since taken on roles in teaching, research, and administration at the institution. Upon his appointment as Vice Chancellor, he views his role as a responsibility to strengthen the university, uphold its reputation, and transform it into an outstanding institution for future generations.
Recognizing the growth in Kathmandu University’s size, reach, and programs, Baral noted, “With expansion come increased challenges.” He emphasized the necessity to develop the university in a way that it can sustain itself in international competition, conduct impactful research, and contribute directly to national development.
Baral shared plans focused on academic excellence, research, and innovation, as well as initiatives for internationalization and digital transformation. He expressed, “My goal is to develop Kathmandu University not only as a premier institution in Nepal but also as a university with a distinctive identity across South Asia.”
