Zelensky Reveals Transfer of North Korean Prisoners of War to South Korea, Sparking Diplomatic Strain

The transfer of two North Korean prisoners of war captured during the Russia-Ukraine conflict to South Korea has led to increased diplomatic tensions between Seoul and Kyiv. South Korea has demanded a formal explanation and an apology, accusing Ukraine of violating a confidential agreement. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky disclosed at the United Nations General Assembly that the transfer occurred without prior consultation, while Ukraine insists there was no confidentiality agreement in place. Serious diplomatic friction has arisen between South Korea and Ukraine. South Korea’s presidential office stated that Ukraine publicly revealed information that was supposed to remain confidential, prompting demands for formal clarification and an apology. Senior presidential secretary for public relations, Song Gi-ho, expressed dissatisfaction with Ukraine’s unilateral action in a statement released on Sunday.

According to Secretary Song, Ukraine had engaged in discussions with South Korea through various channels regarding the transfer of these prisoners of war. Ukraine itself had requested that the matter remain confidential. However, the controversy escalated after Zelensky publicly disclosed details. South Korean officials believe this move by Ukraine has dealt a severe blow to mutual trust and could negatively affect bilateral relations.
