Nana Patekar Passes Away: Renowned Indian Actor Known for Distinctive Style and Vibrant Performances

Veteran Indian film actor Nana Patekar, known for his vibrant acting and distinctive dialogue delivery, passed away at the age of 75, his son Malhar Patekar has confirmed.
According to Indian news agency PTI, Patekar’s death was due to a heart attack.
He was found unconscious at his residence in Goa on Thursday morning and was immediately taken to the hospital.
At the time, only his aides and a friend were present at his house, and they transported him to the hospital via ambulance.
Dr. Shekhar Sanlukhe of Manipal Hospital, Goa stated, “CPR was performed continuously for 45 minutes, but he could not be revived.”
Patekar was among the most recognizable faces in Indian cinema and had won three National Film Awards. His acting style was notable for bringing complex, emotional, and often volatile characters to life. He was also an influential figure in Marathi cinema and theatre.
Various prominent personalities, including Prime Minister Narendra Modi, have paid tribute to Patekar. Modi praised his multifaceted acting skills and forthright personality.
On social media platform X, Modi wrote that the characters played by Patekar will be remembered for generations. His passing leaves a significant void in the world of arts.
Bollywood actor Akshay Kumar, who collaborated with Patekar in the film ‘Welcome,’ remembered him as an “artist of rare talent.”
Akshay lauded Patekar’s voice, intensity in acting, and his ability to captivate the audience with sincerity.
Patekar began his film career in 1978 with the movie ‘Gaman.’
For some years, he appeared in minor roles, but his energetic and impactful acting soon endeared him to audiences.
He became widely known in 1989 after securing the lead role in ‘Parinda.’
His portrayal of the unstable and fierce gangster Anna in ‘Parinda’ won him critical acclaim and earned him his first National Film Award and Filmfare Award.

After that, Patekar never looked back.
In the 1990s, he portrayed numerous unforgettable characters that showcased the depth and skill of his acting talent.
His role as Major Chouhan in the film ‘Prahaar,’ which he also directed, received widespread praise. He then gained further acclaim for his antagonist role as Majid Khan in ‘Angaar,’ the patriotic and spirited character in ‘Tirangaa,’ and particularly for his role as Pratap Narayan Tilak in ‘Krantiveer.’
He won the National Film Award for Best Actor for ‘Krantiveer.’
While critics initially viewed him as an actor who played aggressive and intense roles, he surprised them with a sensitive and moving performance as a mute and deaf man in ‘Khamoshi.’

In 2010, director Prakash Jha’s film ‘Rajneeti’ added a new dimension to his acting career, where his portrayal of a shrewd and influential politician received great acclaim.
The diverse roles he played demonstrated his ease in portraying gangsters, soldiers, policemen, leaders, patriots, villains, comedic roles, and tragic characters.
He worked comfortably in both Hindi and Marathi cinema and occasionally was active behind the camera as director and writer.
Patekar’s three National Film Awards for ‘Parinda,’ ‘Krantiveer,’ and ‘Agni Sakshi’ attest to his successful and distinctive acting journey.
He was also a significant personality in Marathi and Hindi theatre before his major film success, spending years honing his strong and realistic dialogue-delivery style.
His notable stage plays included ‘Purush’ and ‘Hamidabai Chi Kothi.’
Even after achieving great success as a film artist, he continued involvement in theatre.
Patekar was also active in social campaigns.
He was known for openly and courageously criticizing government policies and ministers. He never hesitated to voice public criticism.
He was particularly passionate about farmer-related issues.
Beyond his words, in 2015 he co-founded the ‘Naam Foundation’ with actor Makrand Anaspure, which works on farmer welfare and water conservation in Maharashtra.
However, his career was not without controversy.
In 2018, actress Tanushree Dutta accused Patekar of misconduct on a film set nearly a decade earlier, sparking a major conversation within India’s #MeToo movement. Patekar denied these allegations.
In 2019, police cleared him due to insufficient evidence.
