March 30, Kathmandu – Mahesh Basnet, Secretary of the Communist Party of Nepal (Unified Marxist-Leninist), has welcomed the Kathmandu District Court’s decision not to issue an arrest warrant against him, as the police had not secured court approval for his arrest. In a statement released on Monday via Facebook, Secretary Basnet described the court’s order as a “welcome step by the judiciary against the politics of revenge.”
“Under directives from the autocratic Balen government and the so-called Home Minister, the Kathmandu District Police, through government attorneys, had proceeded with false criminal charges, but the District Court has ordered the police not to arrest me,” Basnet wrote. “I would like to express my sincere gratitude to the Kathmandu District Court for this decision. The judiciary’s stance against vindictive politics is highly commendable.”
Today, the Kathmandu District Court refused to grant permission to issue an arrest warrant against Basnet, noting that the complaint and related case files had been forwarded to the Patan High Court.

Secretary of the Ministry, Laxmikumari Basnet, noted that postal stamps contribute to the preservation and promotion of the country’s archaeological and historical assets. Director General of the Postal Service Department, Manmaya Pangeni Bhattarai, highlighted the important role postal stamps play as international ambassadors, stating that the department continues to publish stamps aimed at preserving history, religion, and culture. A discrepancy has arisen after differing statements from the Ministry of Education and the Education Minister regarding the closure of preparatory classes related to higher education starting from the upcoming Baishakh. According to the ministry’s secretary, the government will only close such classes up to Grade 12.

According to a statement released by the ministry’s spokesperson Shivkumar Sapkota on Sunday, “A ministerial decision has been made to completely shut down entrance exam preparatory classes and bridge courses across various school and higher education levels starting from Baishakh 1st.”

However, shortly thereafter, Education Minister and government spokesperson Sasmita Pokharel issued a notice on Facebook clarifying that the decision pertains only to the closure of some additional preparatory classes targeting students up to Grade 12. This created ambiguity for some regarding the status of higher education preparatory classes.

“The line written by the minister yesterday evening on social media is clear,” ministry secretary Chudamani Paudel said. “Preparatory classes will be fully closed up to Grade 12, while classes above this level will only be regulated, not closed.”

Army Defeats Bagmati with Outstanding Batting by Kushal Malla

In a match reduced to 28 overs, Army achieved Bagmati’s target of 209 runs with just one ball to spare, losing seven wickets in the process. Malla scored an unbeaten 90 off 58 balls, including 3 fours and 8 sixes. Opener Tritaraj Das contributed 54 runs, and Naren Saud added 26.

During the chase, Army reached 118 for 5. From that position, Malla played an exceptional innings, hitting five sixes in the final two overs when 35 runs were needed, himself scoring 33 runs in that period. Against Sandip Lamichhane in the 27th over, Malla struck three sixes, scoring 22 runs.

For Bagmati, Ishan Pande and Bibek Magar took two wickets each, while Rijan Dhakal, Sandip Lamichhane, and Sonu Devkota claimed one wicket apiece.

Supreme Court Directs Government to Explain Reasons for Arresting Oli

The Supreme Court has ordered the government to present the reasons for the arrest of former Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli. Oli’s wife, Radhika Shakya, filed a petition in the Supreme Court claiming that her husband was being held illegally in detention.

An investigation commission formed to probe the Jenjo uprising recommended that Oli and then Home Minister Ramesh Lekhak be investigated. On March 30, in Kathmandu, a bench led by Justice Meghraj Pokharel of the Supreme Court issued a show-cause order. Questions arose regarding actions taken by Oli in his capacity as Prime Minister during the events of the Jenjo uprising on September 8 and 9.

The government-appointed commission to investigate the Jenjo uprising recommended that Oli be investigated, along with then Home Minister Ramesh Lekhak. Following this recommendation, both Oli and Lekhak were arrested on Saturday morning.

The Supreme Court has issued a show cause order regarding the writ petition seeking the release of former Home Minister Ramesh Lekhak.

The decision on other petitions seeking the release of former Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli is still pending.

Assistant Spokesperson of the Supreme Court, Nirajan Pandey, said, “A show cause order has been issued in one petition. The order in the other will also be issued today.”

Regarding the show cause order issued for the habeas corpus petition of former Home Minister Lekhak, he added, “With the issuance of the show cause order, the case will now be heard in a joint bench.”

The petition filed by Lekhak’s wife, Yashoda Lekhak, was heard in the bench of Justice Kumar Regmi.

March 29, Kathmandu – The Gandaki Province cricket team secured a historic victory in the PM Cup by defeating the departmental team APF Club at the Tallo Mulapani cricket ground.

For the first time in PM Cup history, Gandaki overcame a departmental team, successfully winning by 43 runs. Due to poor ground conditions caused by rain, the match was reduced to 21 overs.

To overcome the APF team, which included national captain Rohit Paudel and other international players, Gandaki’s spinners delivered a brilliant performance, complemented by solid contributions from the batsmen.

Batsmen Gaurav Bik, Deepak Dumre, Arjun Kumal, and captain Bipin Khatri played significant innings. The 150-run total in this T20-like format proved challenging for APF.

From the outset, the spin bowlers made a strong impact, dismantling APF’s top order. Unbeaten Rohit Paudel and Sibrin Shrestha exerted pressure at the top. All-rounder Subash Bhandari also delivered an impressive bowling spell, not giving APF any chance.

Dominance of Spin Bowling Overwhelms APF Batting

In the 21-over match, APF opened with Lokesh Bam and Asif. However, Lokesh was dismissed after 9 balls for 14 runs by unbeaten spinner Paudel.

Asif, who scored a century in the first game, was also sent back for 14 runs by Paudel. Meanwhile, captain Rohit was bowled by Sibrin Shrestha.

Earlier openers Deepak Bohara and Sandip Jora were dismissed cheaply for 6 and 8 runs respectively by Paudel and Sibrin, causing APF’s innings to collapse at 47-5.

Due to rain, play started late with the ground at Tallo Mulapani still drying, and the match was reduced to 21 overs. Winning the toss, Gandaki elected to bat first.

Openers Gaurav Bik and Arjun Kumal provided a solid start. Although Gaurav was dismissed for 37 and Arjun for 25, they laid a good foundation for the innings.

Deepak Dumre contributed 34, captain Bipin Khatri remained unbeaten with 20 runs, and Dinesh Budhamagar scored 19, helping Gandaki compile a total of 150 runs.

Captain Bipin noted that the overcast conditions favored their ability to defend the total. “Being players from Pokhara, we are accustomed to playing in such conditions. We believed we could defend a good total,” he said.

The poster features images of Anmol KC and Princy Khatri. Alongside the poster release, Anmol KC shared a message for his fans: “A gift for those who love me on my birthday — see you during Dashain.”

The film is a love story set in a rural backdrop, produced by Jia KC and Bhavishya Khadka. Producer Jia commented, “While watching the film, audiences will feel as if they’re experiencing Nepali society from 30 years ago, along with a sense of the present.”

Bhuvan KC directs the movie and also plays a lead role.

The government led by Prime Minister Balindra Shah has released a ‘Governance Reform Agenda’ which, although difficult and challenging to implement, stakeholders regard as not impossible to achieve.

The agenda encompasses numerous issues directly related to the public, making effective implementation crucial. Discussions are ongoing about the exclusion of topics such as foreign employment and addressing victims of conflict.

The agenda was passed in the first meeting of the new cabinet on Friday and made public on Saturday. It covers areas including administrative, political, social justice, and citizen services reforms.

What Does the Agenda Include?

The 100-point agenda commits to formally apologizing to Dalit and marginalized communities within 15 days and declaring reform-oriented programs.

It calls for preparing a national commitment integrating actionable issues from the manifestos of all political parties to establish joint government ownership, and forming a working group to draft a ‘Constitutional Amendment Discussion Paper’ to build national consensus on political and institutional reforms and necessary election system amendments.

Fakhar Zaman Faces Possible Ban for Ball Tampering Allegations

Artwork Created by Women but Recognized Under Men’s Names

Throughout art history, it has been common for only men’s names to be mentioned. However, men were not the sole painters in every instance; women were also renowned artists. Yet, because no one held rightful credit over their artworks, history has failed to acknowledge these women. For example, the painting The Triumph of Bacchus was attributed to others for centuries. This highly realistic oil painting, created in 1629, depicts figures enjoying a drinking session. Only recently was it confirmed that the female artist Michelina Wautier painted it. In her honor, the Royal Academy in London hosted a major exhibition featuring this and other works by her. This article highlights other female painters and their notable artworks as well.

The Triumph of Bacchus: In 1993, art historian Katlijne Van der Stighelen discovered this painting while researching the collection of Vienna’s Kunsthistorisches Museum. Although it had no signature, its grandeur suggested a significant hidden story. She suspected a woman could have painted it. The museum’s curator, Gustav Glück, initially declared the work could not be by a woman. Later, it was confirmed that Michelina Wautier was the artist. She is also depicted in the painting, on the right side, boldly portrayed semi-nude in a combative pose.

Credit for this artwork was initially given to her brother, and many of her other paintings were mistakenly attributed to male artists. Today, she is considered the greatest artistic rediscovery of this century.

Self-Portrait as Saint Catherine of Alexandria: Artemisia Gentileschi Artemisia Gentileschi created expressive emotional paintings during her youth and was in high demand. However, with the decline of Baroque style popularity in the 1700s, she faded into obscurity. Many of her works were attributed to other artists. It was only in 2017 that this self-portrait was officially authenticated as hers.

The Carousing Couple (1630): Dutch painter Judith Leyster was highly respected during her lifetime but was overshadowed by male contemporaries after her death. Most of her works were credited to her husband Jan Miense Molenaer or to Frans Hals. The truth emerged only in 1892 when a dealer found the initials “JL” and a star symbol (a nod to her name meaning “pole star”) under Frans Hals’s signature.

Baroness Elsa von Freytag and Morton Schamberg: In the 19th and 20th centuries, female artists were often dismissed as amateurs or immature. Many women were relegated to the background as mere muses. Among these was a courageous figure, German painter and poet Baroness Elsa von Freytag.

Margaret Keane: ‘Tomorrow Forever’ (1963) The 2014 film Big Eyes portrayed the story of American artist Margaret Keane. In the 1960s, paintings of children with large eyes were extremely popular, but they were believed to be created by men. According to author Helen Gurley, paintings signed by men were valued higher, while those by women were devalued.

Margaret was naturally shy, but her husband Walter was adept at selling and negotiating. He pressured her into allowing him to claim all credit for the paintings. Margaret only signed her works with the surname “Keane.” After their divorce, the dispute reached court, where the judge asked both to paint inside the courtroom.

Walter claimed to have a shoulder injury and did not produce anything, while Margaret completed a recognizable large-eyed child painting within an hour, proving she was the true artist.
