National Folk Communicators Nepal Demands Strict Regulation Against Increasing Obscenity in Folk Music

National Folk Communicators Nepal has expressed serious concern over the rising obscenity and distortion in folk art and dohori (traditional Nepali duel songs). The organization has urged the government to take legal action against controversial artists and their performances. It has also called on artists to be mindful of social dignity and responsibility, ensuring only cultured content is broadcast. Kathmandu, 28 Baisakh.

In an emergency meeting held on Monday under the chairmanship of chairman Chandramani Gautam, the organization emphasized the need for stringent action against artists and content that affect social decorum. The meeting concluded that performances showcased especially through digital platforms and fairs/festivals have negatively impacted the originality and dignity of Nepali folk culture.

Referring to several recent incidents, the organization demanded an investigation into the concerned parties. It found that the words, gestures, and presentation used in a dohori song published on Prakash Adhikari’s YouTube channel have undermined the essence and civility of the dohori tradition.

During the festival in Gulmi, the activities displayed by singer Jyoti Magar on stage were deemed contrary to social decorum and highly objectionable. Similarly, the organization strongly protested the indecent dance performed by model Riya Khadka at a religious site, which was seen as offensive to religious and cultural sentiments.

National Folk Communicators Nepal has demanded strict legal action against the artists involved in these incidents under prevailing laws. Copies of this letter have also been sent to the Ministry of Home Affairs, Ministry of Culture, Tourism and Civil Aviation, and the Cyber Bureau for their information.
