April 14, Kathmandu – The documentary ‘From Soil to Field,’ presenting the history of Nepali kabaddi, was screened on Wednesday. Concurrently, the NKL anthem was unveiled as part of preparations for the second season of the Nepal Kabaddi League.
The screening took place at QFX in Lazimpat, Pulchowk. Directed by Nishan Shahi, the documentary presents historical narratives including the legend that Lord Buddha played ‘Hututu,’ an ancient form of kabaddi. It also explores the formation of the All Nepal Kabaddi Association in 1977 (2034 BS), the launch of the national competition two years later, and the 11-year hiatus caused by the Maoist insurgency, which disrupted the sport’s continuity.
Highlighted in the film are significant milestones such as the Nepali kabaddi team’s historic medal at the 11th South Asian Games (SAG) held in Dhaka, Bangladesh, in 2010, the 13th SAG hosted in Nepal in 2019, and the achievements at the 4th Bangabandhu Cup in Dhaka. Additionally, the documentary showcases the women’s team’s bronze medals at the 19th Asian Games in 2022 in China and the upcoming 6th Asian Beach Games in 2026.
Portraying the transformation from humble beginnings to competitive success, the hour-long documentary emphasizes the resurgence initiated last year with the launch of the NKL.
Presented by Astronics Management, the documentary’s executive producer is Amitkumar Begani, producer Pravin Kumar Sah, editor Suman Khadka, and creative editor Asim Shrestha. After the screening, the NKL anthem composed by rapper Viyom was officially released.
A panel discussion on ‘NKL, Kabaddi, and Professionalism’ was also held, moderated by journalist Raju Ghising. Participants included Astronics Management Chairman Amitkumar Begani, All Nepal Kabaddi Association President Tulsi Thapa, and National Sports Council’s Chief Kabaddi Coach Parvati Rai.
The Nepal Kabaddi League’s second season is set to begin on June 5 (Jestha 22), featuring six teams representing six cities. Through a players’ draft, 84 athletes have been signed, including 54 domestic and 30 foreign players.
The league will take place at the Rakep Covered Hall within the Dashrath Rangasala complex in Tripureshwor. Competing teams include Biratnagar Baahubali (Koshi Province), defending champion Janakpur Knights (Madhesh Province), Kathmandu Mavericks (Bagmati Province), Pokhara Lakers (Gandaki Province), Butwal Bulls (Lumbini Province), and Dhangadhi Wildcats (Sudurpashchim Province).
In the thrilling season one final, Janakpur Knights clinched the championship by defeating the Kathmandu Mavericks.
