Preparations Underway for Government Employees’ Salary Increase, Recommendations Range from Rs 35,000 to Rs 121,000

In the fiscal year 2079-080, salaries of civil servants and teachers were increased by 15 percent, but no salary hikes have occurred in the past three years. The Salary and Allowance Review Committee has recommended setting office assistants’ monthly salary at Rs 35,000 and the chief secretary’s salary at Rs 121,000. The government will assess the economic situation before deciding on the salary increment, while the Civil Service Employees’ Association has demanded a basic salary of Rs 38,862.

Kathmandu, 8 Jestha — During the budget speech for fiscal year 2079-080, Finance Minister Janardan Sharma announced a 15 percent salary increase for civil servants and teachers. However, salary adjustments were not made in fiscal years 2080/081, 2081/082, and 2082/083. According to the Civil Service Act, the Salary and Allowance Review Committee is mandated to review cost-of-living allowances every three years, considering revenue growth rates, total cadre strength, and the previous three years’ price indexes.

According to the committee’s recommendations, if implemented, the lowest-level employees’ salaries will increase by approximately 27 percent, and the chief secretary’s salary will rise by 56.71 percent. Sources from the Ministry of General Administration have confirmed that while the committee has submitted its recommendations, the government will decide the level of salary increase after evaluating the nation’s economic condition.

The Civil Service Employees’ Association has called for setting the basic salary at Rs 38,862. Alongside salary demands, employees have also requested improvements in social security, healthcare, retirement benefits, housing, and professional safety. The government had previously established a high-level Salary and Allowance Commission to review staff salaries, allowances, and benefits, which appears to have informed the committee’s current recommendations for a salary increase.
