Protesters Burn Effigy of Prime Minister Against Decision to Remove Bariyarpatti Customs Office

May 26, Siraha – Citizens protesting the decision to remove the small customs office in Bariyarpatti, Siraha, have burned the effigy of Prime Minister Balendra Shah (Balen) during a torch rally. Local residents and business owners, opposing the government’s decision, are demanding the reinstatement of the customs office. During the demonstration, protesters also raised slogans against the Prime Minister.

According to the protesters, closing the small customs office has severely affected local trade, employment, and revenue collection. They have also expressed concern that weaker border monitoring would increase the risk of smuggling in the area.

The torch rally held Tuesday evening saw a large participation from locals. Participants warned that if the decision is not immediately reversed, they would intensify their protests. Vinod Yadav, Ward No. 3 Chairperson and protest coordinator, stated that decisions against public interest are unacceptable and declared he is ready to resign if necessary. Local businessman Chandeshwar Yadav mentioned that land for the customs office was provided by locals on a grant basis, and the office had been generating monthly revenue of between NPR 8 to 10 lakh. Local leaders have threatened stronger protests if their demands remain unaddressed.
