Update on the Complaints by KP Oli, Ramesh Lekhak, and Prithvi Subba Gurung Regarding the Gen Z Movement Report
The National Human Rights Commission is preparing to initiate legal proceedings after failing to release the investigation report on the Gen Z Movement within two weeks, a delay that has caused dissatisfaction among concerned parties. The commission’s inquiry panel, led by Gauribahadur Karki, which was formed to investigate the incidents of September 8 and 9, had earlier faced questions regarding its legitimacy. Despite these concerns, the investigation report of the same events has remained controversial.
On May 26, former Prime Minister KP Oli, former Home Minister Ramesh Lekhak, and former Minister for Communication and Information Technology Prithvi Subba Gurung filed petitions with the commission raising questions about the report’s recommendations. They have requested complete copies of the report, commission decisions, statements, and related documents.
The commission had formed an investigation committee led by member Lili Thapa after the Gen Z Movement, and publicly released the report. On May 25, the commission announced decisions and recommendations, submitting them to the Prime Minister and Council of Ministers for implementation. Nearly a month later, last Friday, all three leaders submitted similar petitions to the commission.
Mahesh Bartola, a CPN-UML leader who submitted the petition on behalf of former Prime Minister Oli, stated he is awaiting the commission’s response. He said, “This petition expresses our disagreement. It is wrong to accuse leaders like KP Oli of human rights violations, pass retroactive laws, and recommend punitive actions.”
