Microsoft Gaming Reduces Game Pass Prices and Prepares New Console ‘Project Helix’

Following a leadership change, Microsoft Gaming has announced plans to revive the Xbox brand. After adopting the ‘Microsoft Gaming’ name in 2022, coinciding with the acquisition of Activision Blizzard, the company is now moving back towards its original identity. CEO Asha Sharma and CCO Matt Booty stated that Xbox’s renewed goal is to increase the number of daily active players. They acknowledged that while Microsoft Gaming encompassed the company’s structure, it had not fully achieved its ambitions or excellence.

Xbox intends to place gaming consoles at the center of its future strategy. It has formed a multi-year partnership with AMD to develop the next-generation console, codenamed ‘Project Helix,’ which promises high performance and an exceptional gaming experience. Responding to customer complaints and concerns about high service fees, Xbox has reduced the price of its Game Pass subscriptions. The monthly fee for Game Pass Ultimate has been lowered from $29.99 to $22.99, while the PC Game Pass subscription cost has dropped from $16.49 to $3.99.

However, despite these reductions, prices remain somewhat higher compared to the 50% price increase made in October 2025. Xbox has also decided to remove the ‘Call of Duty’ franchise from its ‘day-one’ launch lineup. Additionally, the company has announced plans to further enhance platforms such as Minecraft, The Elder Scrolls, and Sea of Thieves. It aims to expand its reach in China, other emerging markets, and among mobile users. Furthermore, policies regarding the ‘exclusivity window’ for certain games and the use of AI technology will be re-evaluated.

Scientists Identify Protein That Regulates Plant Cell Function

Researchers at Rice University have identified the role of the ‘PEX11’ protein in controlling the size of peroxisomes. Using CRISPR technology, they studied five genes associated with the PEX11 protein. This research is expected to enhance understanding of diseases related to peroxisomes in human cells and open new avenues in bioengineering. April 26, Kathmandu.

During the early stages when seeds germinate into plants, the plant cannot perform photosynthesis to produce food from sunlight, relying entirely on stored fatty acids within itself. Within plant cells, a specialized structure called the ‘peroxisome’ converts these fats into energy. According to the Rice University researchers, this structure is also present in human cells, and because plant cells are larger, they offer an easier study model.

Led by Professor Bonnie Bartel, the research revealed that a small protein called PEX11 plays a crucial role in regulating peroxisome size. Published in Nature Communications, the study shows that this protein not only assists peroxisome division but also prevents unnecessary expansion during the early stages of plant development.

Researcher Nathan Tharp utilized CRISPR technology to study five different genes related to the PEX11 protein. The investigation revealed that when these genes are nonfunctional, the small vesicles within the peroxisome fail to form. Under normal conditions, these vesicles absorb fragments of the peroxisome’s outer membrane to maintain its size balance. The significance of this research extends beyond plants to humans and other species. Scientists found that when a similar protein found in mice was inserted into mutated plant cells, those cells returned to their normal state. This demonstrates that the functions of this protein have been conserved and evolved uniformly across millions of years in various species.

Iran’s Attack Impacts US Economy, Deepening Energy Crisis

The US Federal Reserve is highly likely to maintain interest rates within the current range of 3.50 to 3.75 percent at its upcoming meeting. The ongoing conflict in the Middle East has disrupted global oil supply, driving energy prices up and pushing US inflation to 3.3 percent. The Federal Reserve is adopting a strategy to keep interest rates stable amid political pressure and economic challenges, while the direction of future policy remains uncertain. April 26, Washington.

The Federal Reserve is expected to hold interest rates steady at the upcoming meeting, a move analysts link to present economic and geopolitical conditions. Currently, rates are set between 3.50 and 3.75 percent, and no changes are anticipated. The primary reason is the ongoing Middle East conflict, which has affected global oil supplies. Specifically, rising fuel and energy costs have increased production, transportation, and everyday consumer goods prices in the US, adding further pressure on inflation. Inflation in the US has reached 3.3 percent, marking the highest level in nearly two years.

The Federal Reserve aims to maintain price stability and balance the labor market. However, balancing these objectives has become increasingly challenging because tightening monetary policy is necessary to control inflation, but policymakers must also avoid undermining economic growth and employment. Experts note that not only the energy crisis but also supply chain disruptions are sustaining high inflation levels. This situation has raised the likelihood of reduced consumer spending and increased cost pressures for businesses. These factors have diminished the chance that the Federal Reserve will lower interest rates in the near term.

Federal Reserve officials are currently following a “wait and see” approach, as the full impact of the conflict remains unclear. Some policymakers have warned of elevated long-term inflation risks, which have weakened prospects for future interest rate reductions. Furthermore, the Federal Reserve faces mounting political pressure. US President Donald Trump has consistently urged rate cuts, sparking debates about the Fed’s independence and leadership. Consequently, the upcoming meeting will be not only an economic decision but also politically significant. Given the energy crisis, high inflation, labor market uncertainty, and political pressures, the Federal Reserve is most likely to maintain interest rates without change, while the future course of policy remains uncertain.

During the monitoring of settlements demolished by bulldozers and the condition of the displaced people, officials from the National Human Rights Commission and land rights activists revealed several issues in managing squatters displaced from the riverbanks of Kathmandu. Squatters housed at the Radhaswami Satsang Ashram in Kirtipur complained about the lack of timely food arrangements. “Due to delays in receiving food, those requiring regular medication, especially the elderly, are experiencing increased difficulties,” said Yagyaprasad Adhikari, head of the commission’s Protection Department. He added, “Even when the monitoring team arrived, food deliveries from the Metropolitan Office were delayed.”

After the demolition of riverbank squatter settlements and heavy rains in the capital, the displaced have faced challenges in safeguarding their belongings, said land rights activist Bhagwati Adhikari. “I visited the Manohara area where items were left in the fields without any shelter. There, a mother expressed her distress over the lack of food and water,” she stated.

Landless individuals housed in hotels near the New Bus Park also complained that while the hotels are supposed to provide accommodation, they are not providing food, according to land rights activist Adhikari. “They reported that food is not available there, and due to the absence of anyone overseeing their stored belongings, they are compelled to leave the guest houses,” she explained. Some squatters have established contact with the government. Kathmandu Metropolitan City has announced plans to convert the vacated squatter settlements in Thapathali, Gairigaun, and the border areas of Bhaktapur into green spaces, parks, roads, and parking areas.

How Long Can an Induction Stove Be Used Continuously?

News Summary

Prepared after editorial review.

  • An induction stove cannot be used continuously for long hours like gas; it requires intermittent breaks.
  • For the longevity of an induction stove, factors such as appropriate cookware, temperature control, regular cleaning, and stable power supply must be considered.

The induction stove has emerged as a fast, safe, and modern essential kitchen appliance. Due to shortages, rising prices, or supply issues of LPG gas, many people are increasingly attracted to induction cooking.
However, a common question is – can induction stoves be used continuously like gas? And if so, how to use them safely?

What Is an Induction Stove and How Does It Work?

An induction stove is a modern electric appliance that heats cookware directly through magnetic technology. Unlike gas flames, it does not produce visible fire, making it considered a safer and more energy-efficient cooking method.

In Nepal, with reduced load shedding and increased electricity production, the use of induction stoves is also on the rise.

Can Induction Stoves Be Used Continuously Like Gas?

It is not entirely accurate to think that induction stoves can operate continuously for long periods like gas. Although capable of functioning for extended times, as electrical appliances, overuse can cause their temperature to rise, increasing the risk of automatic shutdowns or faster damage.

Therefore, it is wise to allow breaks when used continuously. For example, after cooking for two hours, turning it off briefly to cool down is appropriate.

Selecting the Right Cookware

Not all types of cookware are compatible with induction stoves. Cookware with specific magnetic properties is required, with steel or iron pots generally considered suitable. Many households in Nepal still use aluminum or brass cookware, which do not work well on induction stoves, leading to increased energy consumption and uneven cooking. Thus, choosing appropriate cookware is essential.

How to Control Temperature?

Some people cook by setting high temperatures immediately. A notable feature of induction stoves is their rapid heating capability, much faster than gas. Starting cooking at high temperatures can easily burn food.

Hence, it is recommended to begin cooking at a low temperature and gradually increase as needed. This not only enhances the food’s flavor but also prevents unnecessary strain on the stove’s internal components.

Need for Air Vents and Cleaning

Induction stoves have fans and air vents that help expel hot air and keep the device cool. Over time, dust, oil, and grime can block these vents, increasing the risk of overheating and damage. In dust-prone environments like Nepal, regular cleaning is necessary to maintain the appliance’s longevity.

The Role of Stable Electricity Supply

Stable and adequate voltage is crucial for proper induction stove operation. Some regions in Nepal still face voltage fluctuations, which can affect the stove’s performance.

In such cases, using a voltage stabilizer or high-quality wiring is advisable, which protects the appliance and extends its lifespan.

Focus on Durability

To use an induction stove effectively, attention to details like suitable cookware, proper temperature management, taking breaks after prolonged use, regular cleaning, and stable power supply is essential. Ignoring these factors can shorten its functional life.

When used thoughtfully, an induction stove not only serves as a great alternative to gas but also offers a safer and more modern cooking solution.

Heavy Rain Causes Flooding in Jaleshwar, Mahottari

Following a thunderstorm accompanied by hail on April 25, the market areas of Jaleshwar in Mahottari district have been severely flooded. The town’s intersections and roads have been submerged, causing disruptions to pedestrian movement and vehicle traffic. Locals report that the flooding has worsened due to inadequate drainage systems, with water filling both government and non-government office premises.
